About Proston
The Proston area was built on the back of hardworking farmers who came to the region after the Queensland Government decided to open up the land to more intensive settlement in 1910. A ballot for the land was held with 500 people, including a syndicate from England, all arriving at the Wondai Land Court hoping to be one of the future landholders.
With no reliable water available until Boondooma Dam was built in the 1980s, times were tough for Proston producers and the township. Life on the land was extremely hard, but despite this, the quaint little country town has managed to survive, with the region hosting serveral events including a campdraft, the annual Country Show, The Summer Carnival hosted by the Proston Golf Club, fishing competitions at Boondoma Dam, Car Rallies and music events to name a few. Make sure to stop of at the Sidcup Castle on Wondai Road. Built by Englishman Harold Douglas,
Sidcup is a replica of his childhood home in Kent and the strange 17-room building has become something of a local landmark. Before leaving, take a little rest stop and get a picture with the town’s local fisherman at the water fountain. Enjoy a counter meal at the iconic country pub with a pink roof or the Golf Club before making the trek out to nearby Boondooma Dam for some boating, camping and fishing fun and explore the historic Boondooma Homestead.
One of the gems of the Boondooma region, the Proston District Golf Club boasts a 9-hole 18-tee course and free camping with hot showers, toilets and free firewood and free wifi. The camping area is suitable for big rigs, vans or tents and the club can easily accommodate large groups in the restaurant open every Friday night.
