About the Museum

The Roy Emerson Museum, situated at the head of the Rail Trail in Blackbutt, Queensland, is a relatively new establishment, having been founded in 2011. Despite its recent inception, the museum has quickly become a focal point for preserving and sharing the rich history of the surrounding South Burnett region. The museum's ambitious vision aims to showcase the countless stories and historical photographs spanning back to the year 1842 from the districts of Benarkin, Blackbutt, Taromeo, Nukku, Gilla, and Googa.

Points of interest!

Additionally, the museum has embraced modern technology to further its mission of preserving and sharing history. A documentary available on the museum's website showcases the reconstruction of the Taromeo Cemetery following the devastating floods of 2012. Members of the history group, alongside other community members, played a significant role in this reconstruction project, highlighting the collaborative spirit and dedication of those involved in preserving the region's heritage.

Where it started

One of the key elements driving the museum's success is the active involvement of the older generation within the community. Their invaluable contributions, including sharing oral histories and family photographs, have been instrumental in bringing the region's history to life. Through their efforts, the Museum has been able to offer visitors a glimpse into the past and a deeper understanding of the area's heritage.

What to expect?

As the Roy Emerson Museum continues to evolve and grow, it stands as a testament to the community's commitment to honoring its past and ensuring that future generations can appreciate and learn from the rich history of the South Burnett region.

The name bBlackbutt' came about in 1909 because it was a common term for various species of dark barked eucalypts which were logged and milled there for generations.
