Yarraman
Technically part of the Toowoomba region, Yarraman is still considered part of the South Burnett for more than just its proximity. Like much of the rest of the region, Yarraman is steeped in timber history and still has an operational sawmill running today. The region’s rich timber origins are carefully displayed with seven large carved heads dotted around town. The original design is shrouded in mystery, with no one knowing exactly when, who, how or why the timber creation was first carved. The most commonly accepted story involves a group of Maori workers who were employed during the construction of the Tarong Power Station in the 1980s.
The old pub yarn says the workers finished off a night on the town by taking their chisels to a large block of wood, which sits outside the Royal Hotel to this day. Since then the Yarraman Business group have funded the careful carving of six additional timber ‘Yarramen’ all with their own unique decorative designs.
The name Yarraman means horse in the Port Jackson Pidgin English spread by Aboriginal stockmen in eastern Australia. It derives from the word ‘yira’ or ‘yera’ meaning large teeth. The town ship had paid homage to this with an impressive horse sculpture rearing on his hind legs just up the hill from the Police Station on the main street through town.
The Yarraman State Forest is home to impressive hoop pines plantations as well as subtropical rainforest and prickly vine forests on the broad hills above the town. Drive through the plantations to picnic or barbecue at picturesque Rogers Park. While camping is not permitted at Yarraman State Forest, walkers can use the logging and service tracks to view a great variety of birdlife within the towering hoop pine plantations and dense vine forests and registered four-wheel-drive vehicles and trail bikes, horses and bicycles may be driven or ridden on formed roads in this forest.
