Kumbia
A small town nestled into the foothills of the Bunya Mountains, on the Bunya Highway, between the Mountains and Kingaroy. Kumbia is known for its stone fruit farms with the growers spanning back generations, with the packing sheds open to tourists upon pre-arrangement. The Kumbia Golf Course is also a great place to enjoy a leisurely 18-holes while overlooking one of the best views in the Burnett, the majestic Bunya mountains. Built around the local racetrack, the course provides an interesting and challenging game of golf – but beware straight hitting is in order as you are faced with some gnarly out of bounds.
The Kumbia Federation Heritage Centre on Bell Street is home to a treasure trove of historical photographs, local historical records and artefacts relating to the early residents of Kumbia. The collection features an extensive pictorial history of the Kumbia district and is open Sunday afternoons or by appointment.
From Kumbia you’re only a hop, skip and a jump away from the second-longest man-made structure in the world. The Wild Dog Barrier Fence, also known as The Dingo Fence was erected during the 1880s to keep dingoes out of the relatively fertile southeast part of the continent and to protect the sheep flocks of Southern Queensland. It stretches an impressive 5,614 kilometres. The fence passes through Queensland, NSW and South Australia and is the world's longest fence, starting in the little Western Down’s town of Jandowae, just 45 minutes west of Kumbia. One of the most picturesque locations near the South Burnett to enjoy the enormous man-made feat is Boiling Springs Lookout in Cooranga 30 minutes from Kumbia.
From the Lookout you may as well make a stop at Coopers Gap Wind Farm, another mighty man-made creation shared between the South Burnett and its western neighbours. Completed in 2020, Coopers Gap Wind Farm is one of Australia's largest wind farms with a whopping 153 turbines producing approximately 1.50 million megawatt-hours of energy per year, which is sufficient to power more than 260,000 average Australian homes. With some of the blades measuring 60 metres long, weighing 22 tonnes and fixed more than 100 metres in the air, the wind farm is quite the spectacle.
