Goomeri
Goomeri
Technically part of the Gympie region, Goomeri still holds a special place as a close neighbour to the South Burnett due to it’s beautiful location, gorgeous bakery and shops and of course, the great Goomeri Pumpkin Festival. Held on the last Sunday in May each year the festival attracts up to 14,000 visitors to the little township each year with the highlight event the "Great Australian Pumpkin Roll" down Policeman's Hill participated by hundreds of visitors of all ages. In a Nutshell
During the 1990s, Goomeri, like many other rural areas, was in a time of prolonged drought and water shortages. Farmers and local businesses were doing it tough and morale was at an all time low. A town meeting was held to discuss ideas for improving the town’s morale and lagging business economy. One of the ideas was to have a festival of some kind. As pumpkins had been traditionally grown in the area over a number of years, the idea of a Pumpkin Festival was born and the inaugural Goomeri Pumpkin Festival was held on June 1, 1997 and has become one of the region’s biggest tourism events.
Known for its laid back, old world charm Goomeri has a number of heritage-listed sites including the war memorial hall, the Goomeri Hall of Memory on Boonara Street and the Goomeri War Memorial Clock along the Burnett Highway. A trip to Goomeri wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the legendary Goomeri Bakery. The modern French Bakery does a particularly wonderful sourdough, which is perfect paired with a range of South Burnett preserves and fresh produce.
If you feel like a bit of an adventure head east on the Bunya Highway and follow the signs for Kinbombi Falls. The falls are a popular free camping destination, just 10 minutes outside Goomeri and an excellent place to explore by foot. The pool at the base of the falls is a great spot to cool off after hiking, so long as there has been some recent rainfall to flush it out.
