About Blackbutt
Blackbutt, a charming town with a rich history, was named after the dark-barked eucalyptus trees that were abundant in the area and extensively logged and milled in the early 20th century. It earned the reputation of being the region's timber town due to its significant role in the timber industry.
Today, Blackbutt has transformed into a picturesque gateway to the South Burnett region and is renowned for its avocado production. The town hosts an annual festival dedicated to this beloved fruit, known as the Blackbutt Festival. Taking place on the second Saturday in September, it stands out as Australia's sole east coast avocado celebration.
The Blackbutt Festival is a lively event where avocados take center stage. Participants engage in various avocado-themed competitions such as avocado toss, avocado roll, avocado golf, and even an avocado parachute jump! The festival attracts competitors from far and wide, adding to the vibrant atmosphere of the community event.
In addition to its avocado festivities, Blackbutt boasts a proud sporting heritage. The town has produced notable athletes like the Argent Brothers, Mitch (Australian Champion - Stihl Timbersports) and Jack (Rookie World Championship Winner - Stihl Timbersports), as well as international tennis legend Roy Emerson. This demonstrates the town's competitive spirit and its contribution to sporting excellence.
The Roy Emerson Museum, located on Bowman Road near the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail (BVRT), offers visitors a glimpse into the life and tennis career of the legendary Roy Emerson. The museum showcases photographs and stories detailing Emerson's achievements and contributions to the sport of tennis. A highlight for visitors is the opportunity to pose for photos with a life-size bronze statue of Roy Emerson, situated at the Nukku Nook precinct, which also serves as the Blackbutt Visitor Information Centre.
Art enthusiasts will appreciate a visit to the Railway Gallery on Greenhills Drive, founded by local artist Janet Skinner. This gallery showcases an original railway collection featuring 104 stations, paintings depicting the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail, a working studio, and a display of Janet Skinner's latest contemporary works. Additionally, visitors can admire the new mural adorning the side of the Blackbutt Hardware building, facing Les Muller Park, which adds to the town's artistic appeal.
Overall, Blackbutt offers a blend of history, culture, and agricultural heritage, making it a unique destination within the South Burnett region of Queensland, Australia.
