About Kingaroy
Kingaroy is synonymous with red soil and peanuts but there’s much more to this town than meets the eye. To get a good vantage point of the township, take a little drive (or a walk if you’re feeling brave) up Mt Wooroolin. The lookout provides views of the heritage-listed peanut silos as well as the surrounding farmland and if it’s a clear day you’ll also catch the beautiful Bunya Mountains looming in the distance. The Kingaroy Heritage Museum, South Burnett Visitor Information Centre and Regional Art Gallery are all conveniently located together on Haly Street and will provide the whole family with fascinating peanut and pioneering history. If you consider yourself an agricultural and machinery history buff, the Kingaroy Heritage Museum is a must visit.
Housed inside the town's old powerhouse, the museum was nominated as one of the five best museums to visit in Southern Queensland Country and is Australia's only peanut industry based museum. You will easily be able to spend a couple of hours exploring the early harvesting and threshing machines, the life and times of local legends Sir Joh and Lady Flo Bjelke -Petersen and the latest beautiful art exhibitions in the gallery next door. The Kingaroy Airport is home to two other big attractions taking tourists to new heights, The Kingaroy Observatory and Kingaroy Soaring, a gliding club offering lessons and 20-30 minute flights over the picturesque Kingaroy Valley with views towards Wondai, Nanango, Tarong Power Station and the Bunya Mountains.
Kingaroy is also home to the Big Peanut! Located at Lion’s Park, across from the Peanut Van, the intricate metal design features old pieces of local farming machinery. Kingaroy's CBD streetscape recently received a facelift with the addition of several picnic tables and green spaces creating great spots to enjoy a coffee or lunch and colourful lighting making for a cheery night time scene. Each of the light posts you see around the CBD represent a township or pocket of the South Burnett with special local items from each town carefully chosen to represent these places. If you look closely you will notice the Kingaroy lamp posts are bedecked with little ants to represent its aboriginal origin, translating to “Red Ants”.
Kingaroy is quickly becoming a little mecca for street art with two bright new additions recently being added to the Visitor Information Centre and main street. For all the crafters, the Queensland Winter Craft Festival is a must see with this mega quilting and craft extravaganza occurring annually in June and July. There are a number of different arts and crafts workshops, demonstrations, exhibitions, competitions and classes on offer as well as the celebrated quilt trail taking place across the region. For more information, head to the Kingaroy Art Gallery.
