About the Heritage Centre
In 1980, a pivotal moment occurred in Kumbia's history when a public meeting was convened, sparking the inception of the Kumbia and District Historical Society. The driving force behind this endeavor was to safeguard the rich heritage of the Kumbia area and instill a sense of pride in future generations by preserving the tangible legacies left by their ancestors.
Since its formation, the Kumbia and District Historical Society, in collaboration with the Kumbia Hall Committee, has made remarkable strides in the preservation and presentation of the region's history. A diverse array of photographs, descriptions, and artifacts, meticulously collected and curated, offers a vivid glimpse into the lives and experiences of early Kumbia residents. Among these treasures are memorabilia dating back to the early 1900s, providing a tangible connection to the past for present-day visitors..
Central to the society's efforts is the preservation of the photographic legacy left by local freelance photographer Harold Mears. Following his passing in 1977, the society successfully acquired his entire collection of 13,000 negatives, many of which capture the essence of the local district, its people, and significant events. To ensure wider access to these invaluable images, the society has reproduced many as postcards, allowing individuals to take home a piece of Kumbia's history.
Building upon Mears' legacy, the society has also been entrusted with a collection of slides by Mr. Ernie Garrett, spanning the decades from the 1950s to the 1970s. These slides offer a vibrant visual record of local life during this period, further enriching the historical tapestry woven by the Kumbia and District Historical Society.
Through its dedication to preservation, presentation, and accessibility, the society continues to honor the past while ensuring that the legacy of Kumbia's history remains alive and accessible for generations to come.
