Running Events
The South Burnett region in Queensland is a vibrant hub for running enthusiasts, offering a variety of events that cater to different levels and interests. A highlight of the area's running calendar is the Wondai Running Festival, an annual event that attracts participants with its scenic courses and community atmosphere. Additionally, the region boasts four parkruns—weekly, free, 5km timed runs held in diverse locations, fostering a strong local running community. For those seeking unique challenges, Dead Cow Gully is an ultra-endurance event set in a picturesque rural landscape, testing the limits of even the most seasoned runners. Relay runs and other community-organized races further enrich the running culture in South Burnett, making it a dynamic destination for both competitive and recreational runners.
The Wondai Country Running Festival combines two big events in Wondai to create a mega family-friendly weekend combining country hospitality and a healthy lifestyle. The annual event is held in June with the festival celebrating the town of Wondai with a day of country fun with markets, music, kids entertainment and more while the running festival allows runners of all abilities to test themselves on a range of different courses across two days. The 2021 event introduced the new 21.1 kilometres in the McEuen Forest Trail run, with participants able to choose to run either 11.1 or 21.1-kilometre courses on Saturday afternoon with three choices on Sunday morning including a gentle 10-kilometre option or the chance to run a half or full marathon. wondaicountryfestival.com.au
Another popular local running event is Dead Cow Gully, an ultra-marathon race held just outside of Nanango on a sixth-generation cattle property. Not for the faint of heart, the backyard marathon is a test of mental and physical strength and endurance, with runners completing a 6.7-kilometre loop every hour until the last runner is left standing. The second Dead Cow Gully event is taking place on April 16 with registrations now open. www.deadcowgully.com.au
The South Burnett Express Rail Trail Relay is all about running, teamwork, and enjoying this amazing part of Queensland.
Teams of 5 – 8 will battle it out on the first Sunday in May., over 60km of relay legs from Kingaroy to Wondai and return.
The concept is simple, one person per team will run each leg (average ~5km per leg) before tagging the next person. The first team back to Kingaroy wins!
A 1km kid’s race will also be held to ensure they don’t miss out on the action.
Sure, it’s a game of tactics and bragging rights, but at the end of the day it’s just about a group of like-minded runners of all fitness levels getting away for the weekend and having a bit of fun
