The South Burnett Energy Centre reflects the past, the people and the energy

The South Burnett Energy Centre stands as a vibrant tribute to the region's history, its people, and the ever-evolving energy technologies that have shaped its past and continue to influence its future trajectory. Housed within a building once owned by Tarong Coal, the center seamlessly blends the industrial heritage of the area with modern exhibition techniques to offer a visually stimulating experience for visitors.

At the heart of the Energy Centre are captivating displays that chronicle the region's journey through time, tracing the development of energy technologies and their impact on the local community. Interactive exhibits invite visitors to immerse themselves in the history of energy production in the South Burnett, from the early days of pioneering efforts to the cutting-edge innovations driving progress today.

One of the highlights of the Energy Centre is its showcase of original engines that powered Nanango for the first time in 1933, providing a tangible link to the region's industrial roots. These historic engines serve as poignant reminders of the ingenuity and perseverance of past generations, whose efforts laid the groundwork for the energy infrastructure that sustains the community today.

Through engaging displays, informative timelines, and hands-on experiences, the South Burnett Energy Centre offers visitors a dynamic exploration of the past, present, and future of energy in the region. By celebrating its rich heritage while embracing the possibilities of tomorrow, the center serves as a beacon of inspiration and education for all who pass through its doors.

ABOUT NANANGO

The South Burnett’s oldest township and Queensland’s fourth oldest, Nanango is brimming with history from as far back as the 1840s. The name Nanango evolved from the Wakka Wakka word "Nunangi" but there is still some dispute over the origins of the name, with the word meaning "large watering hole" and was also the name of a local Aboriginal elder at the time of settlement. Local aboriginal people used Nanango as a gateway to Bunya Mountain nut gatherings and the original settlement was called Noogoonida meaning, "place where the waters gather together".
