Blackbutt and Benarkin
Benarkin
Benarkin was once a bustling little village, thanks to the railway line and teams of bullock wagons that would haul timber through the main street. Now, this tiny town is only home to 60 or so residents, but the community have lovingly honoured their history through several informative storyboards depicting what life was like in Benarkin from the little school to the sawmill, and everything in between. Benarkin State Forest makes for a wonderful adventure for the whole family with both Clancy’s Camping Area and Emu Creek Camping and Day Use Area both wonderful spots adjacent to Emu Creek perfect for a day trip and picnic or even a weekend escape.
Blackbutt
Home of the Aussie avocado, Blackbutt was also the birthplace of Australian tennis legend, Roy Emerson. The Roy Emerson Museum is situated on Bowman Road, adjacent to the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail and contains many photos and stories about Emerson as well as the life-size bronze statue situated at the Nukku Nook precinct. The former Nukku State School was where Emerson attended primary school and also holds memorabilia from the days of local timber cutting, early schooling, farming and the building of the railway.
Blackbutt is also famous for its award winning bakery as well as the annual Avocado Festival. Held each year on the second Saturday in September the Blackbutt Festival is Australia’s only east coast avocado celebration and honours what the beloved fruit has been able to do for the region. The festival is literally raining avocados, with avo tosses and an avocado parachute jump, plus there’s every avocado food and drink you can possibly imagine. The ‘Butt Art’ gallery is also a must-see, showcasing a variety of artists from South East Queensland and giving visitors the opportunity to taste local liqueurs and shop for unique gifts.
