Kingaroy
Kingaroy is synonymous with red soil and peanuts but there’s much more to this town than meets the eye. To get a good vantage point of the township, take a little drive (or a walk if you’re feeling brave) up Mt Wooroolin. The lookout provides views of the heritage-listed peanut silos as well as the surrounding farmland and if it’s a clear day you’ll also catch the beautiful Bunya Mountains looming in the distance. The Kingaroy Heritage Museum, South Burnett Visitor Information Centre and Regional Art Gallery are all conveniently located together on Haly Street and will provide the whole family with fascinating peanut and pioneering history.
In a Nutshell
One of the region's most clandestine tales involves the owner of former local newspaper The Kingaroy Herald, Archibald Blue, a historic clock and an untimely death. The humble clock tower out the front of the courthouse on Kingaroy Street was originally erected in Blue’s name in 1918 after he died following a fight with a German barber. The original clock is now over 100 years old and still running within a minute a week and can be found inside the Kingaroy Heritage Museum.
A trip to Kingaroy is not complete without a visit to the Peanut Van. A local icon since 1969, the Peanut Van sells the freshest local peanuts year-round as well as a wide range of nutty flavoured options including every bacon-lovers dream, hickory-smoked, BBQ pork ribs and maple bacon flavoured peanuts - not to mention the most decadent peanut brittle you’ve ever tasted!
Kingaroy’s new big peanut in a nutshell: Kingaroy will soon be home to an exciting new attraction, the Big Peanut! Construction in Lion’s Park, across from the Peanut Van began in early 2021 with works to be completed between the end of 2021 and early 2022. A community-led project, the Big Peanut was crowd-funded with every donor who contributed $30 or more receiving a plaque with their name on the completed statue. The intricate metal design will feature old pieces of local farming machinery and will light up the park each evening.
The Kingaroy Airport is home to two other big attractions taking tourists to new heights, The Kingaroy Observatory and Kingaroy Soaring, a gliding club offering lessons and 20-30 minute flights over the picturesque Kingaroy Valley with views towards Wondai, Nanango, Tarong Power Station and the Bunya Mountains.
