Maidenwell & Cooyar
Cooyar
To reach the South Burnett travellers from Toowoomba will have to make their way through the country village of Cooyar. Surrounded by scenic drives, rich farmlands and the vast rainforest of the Palms National Park, Cooyar is home to wonderful wildlife including platypus and flying foxes. Early risers can often spot a platypus or two in play in the nearby Cooyar Creek – for the best vantage point, visit the suspension bridge in Swinging Bridge Park. Easily accessed from Cooyar, the Palms National Park preserves remnant rainforest and a stand of piccabeen palms in a spring-fed gully. Whilst at the park enjoy a 650 metre circuit walk looking for grey-headed flying foxes camping over the creek in summers and black-breasted button quails in winter and spring.
Each February Cooyar's Agricultural Show features great country competitions, including a night rodeo.
Maidenwell
A quintessential dairy town, Maidenwell is home to a quaint country pub famous for its monthly pig-on-a-spit dinners. Formerly known as Kings Hotel, Maidenwell Hotel was built in 1913 by John King who also established the township and named it after the first well he dug in the area. The hotel has retained many of its 100 plus year old features including tongue and groove timber walls, picture rails, verandas and also the original two-sided fireplace, which provides a gorgeous ambience in winter – not to mention the friendly spirits of some of its old occupants and regulars, just ask Lisa the publican to tell you more!
Right on Maidenwell’s doorstep is the majestic Coomba Falls, a waterfall and picnic spot tucked away between striking granite cliffs. Popular with bird watchers and photographers, the falls are a lovely spot to relax on a summer day, with the cool water perfect for a quick dip. Be warned, the stairs from the car park down to the falls are quite the pilgrimage and not suitable for prams. After your swim, the Maidenwell Trading Post is the perfect place to fuel up both your car and your stomach. Treat your taste buds with something sweet from Muffin Top Cupcakery and Coffee and check out their huge range of locally produced and handmade sauces, jams, spreads, pickles and chutneys. The trading post also serves up a delicious range of breakfasts, lunches and light meals for the hungrier traveller.
