Nanango
The South Burnett’s oldest township and Queensland’s fourth oldest, Nanango is brimming with history from as far back as the 1840s. The name Nanango evolved from the Wakka Wakka word "Nunangi" but there is still some dispute over the origins of the name, with the word meaning "large watering hole" and was also the name of a local Aboriginal elder at the time of settlement. Local aboriginal people used Nanango as a gateway to Bunya Mountain nut gatherings and the original settlement was called Noogoonida meaning, "place where the waters gather together".
The best way to explore and absorb Nanango’s fascinating facts is via the free app, Soundtrails. Researched and recorded by local historians, including 95-year-old former Mayor of Nanango Reg McCallum, the app details the life and times of Tara’s Hall, to an interesting historical structure called "Nobby's Corner" and then all the way through town to the old Railway platform. A further five-minute journey will take you to the newly restored Masonic Lodge now open to the public and the chance to explore the nearby grounds of the historic Ringsfield House, Nanango’s former maternity hospital.
Nanango is also the gateway to both the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail and the South Burnett Rail Trail thanks to the Nanango Link Trail built between Yarraman and Nanango along the old stock route once used by local pastoralists to herd cattle to the Yarraman railhead. It joins the two rail trails to create a total distance of 305 beautiful kilometres of country cycling from Wulkuraka to Kilkivan via Nanango and Kingaroy. Find more about the South Rail Trail
The South Burnett Energy Centre and Nanango Visitor Information Centre on Henry Street is also worth a visit if you enjoy learning about the early days of both small country townships and electricity. Open seven days a week, the Energy Centre is home to the original engines that supplied energy to Nanango for the first time in 1933. You can also learn about the different forms of energy by using pedal power to generate enough electricity to deliver a sweet treat for your efforts. The information centre is also where you can get your fossickers licence to explore and pan for treasure at Seven Mile Diggings, an old gold mine just off the Yarraman Creek, popular for its supply of alluvial gold.
In a Nutshell
Hannibal’s Bucket is believed to be the first on the Meandu dragline and moved enough material to fill 800,000 backyard swimming pools over its 10-year working life.
