About Wondai
The Wakka Wakka word for Dingo, Wondai is known for its proud timber history, impressive art gallery and quaint country pubs all bursting with history and character. The South Burnett Region Timber Industry Museum is well worth a visit for its impressive timber structure and bullocky team sculpture alone. The museum is a testament to the timber industry, which played a major role in the early settlement of the region and its development. The building also features the Wondai Visitor Information Centre with a gift shop stocking locally produced timber items created by South Burnett artisans.
The Wondai Heritage Museum also offers an insight into the district’s history, with artefacts and memorabilia spanning over 120 years. After your history lesson is complete, head to one of Wondai’s friendly pubs. McEuen State Forest is located just outside of Wondai and a short ride from the South Burnett Rail Trail. The beautiful eucalypt forest is home to nine different mountain biking trails perfect for beginner to intermediate riders to test themselves on. For more information on the trails, head to the mountain biking section on page 46. Wondai is also home to a 48-hour free stopover campsite with unisex toilets and hot showers, situated next to the popular Wondai Art Gallery.
In nearby Coronation Park, there are more toilets, drinking water, electric barbecues and a dump point, making it a convenient place to pull up stumps for a day or two. The Wondai Regional Art Gallery is housed in the original Wondai Station Master’s House. Locally run by a dedicated team of volunteers, the gallery features a range of artists from across the South Burnett,
and beyond with a new exhibition opened on the first Friday of each month, except January. The Wondai Garden Expos (Held every April and September) and the Wondai Running Festival are all huge draw cards for the town.
