About Wondai
Located in the heart of the South Burnett, between Murgon and Kingaroy, Wondai is a town rich in history, culture, and natural beauty. From historic landmarks and fascinating museums to scenic parks and unique artistic installations, Wondai blends the charm of the past with a vibrant creative spirit. The town’s heritage is proudly showcased through well-preserved historic buildings, heritage-listed sites, and public spaces that have long been central to the community’s identity. A stroll through Wondai reveals early 20th-century architecture alongside modern attractions like the Wondai Regional Art Gallery, South Burnett Timber Industry Museum, and Wondai Heritage Museum. Visitors can also stop by the Wondai Visitor Information Centre for local insights and travel tips.
Wondai is also home to beautifully maintained parks and gardens, offering tranquil green spaces for visitors to unwind. Coronation Park, centrally located, features lush gardens, shaded picnic areas, and the popular Musical Tractor, an interactive art installation that adds a playful touch to the town.
On Wondai’s northern outskirts, Dingo Creek Park provides a fantastic outdoor space for families, with a large playground and open areas ideal for relaxation and recreation. The park also serves as a gateway to Wondai’s walking trails, inviting visitors to explore the natural beauty of the region.
For art lovers, Wondai’s Blue Pole Art installations are scattered throughout town, adding bursts of colour and creativity to the landscape. These contemporary sculptures and painted poles celebrate the town’s thriving arts scene, making Wondai as inspiring as it is welcoming.
In nearby Coronation Park, there are more toilets, drinking water, electric barbecues and a dump point, making it a convenient place to pull up stumps for a day or two.
The Wondai Heritage Museum offers an insight into the district's history, with artefacts and memorabilia spanning more than 120 years. The main theme is social and government development. The operating theatre from the 1910 Wondai Hospital has been recreated, complete with devices from that era which provide an interesting appreciation of medical history.
Timber Industry Museum, is well worth a visit for its impressive timber structure and bullocky team sculpture alone. The museum showcases the timber industry's key role in the region’s early settlement and development. The building also features the Wondai Visitor Information Centre with a gift shop stocking locally produced timber items created by South Burnett artisans.
The Wondai Regional Art Gallery Located in the original Wondai Station Master’s House and is the pride of the town. Locally run by a dedicated team of volunteers, the gallery features a range of artists from across the South Burnett and beyond with anew exhibition opened on the first Friday of each month, except January.
