Murgon’s Fossil Museum & Fine Art Gallery

The recent completion of a state-of-the-art cultural centre - “55 Million Years Ago” the Murgon Country Creative Association initiative features a local art gallery and fossil museum, housing replicas of some of the incredibly significant archaeological finds from the region. Discovered in the 1930s, the Murgon Fossil Site is the only site in Australia that records a diverse vertebrate fauna dating from the early Tertiary Period, over 55 million years ago and approximately ten million years after the extinction of the dinosaurs.

Fossil Museum

In the late 1980’s, fossils found near Boat Mountain just outside Murgon in Southern Queensland rocked the palaeontology world. 15 new fossil species discovered here were found to be 55 million years old, predating any other Eocene period fossils found in Australia by 20 million years.

Although tiny in comparison to the bones of dinosaurs and megafauna in western Queensland the Murgon fossils were found to be much older than the Eocene fossils previously found in Riversleigh, fossils that until this date were known to be the oldest fossils recorded in Australia.

Art Gallery

An always changing exhibition of paintings, sculptures, and multi dimensional artworks from local and visiting artists are on display and for sale as you stroll through the open plan gallery. Take home a unique Murgon treasure.

The gallery fosters creativity, artistic excellence, and community engagement through workshops, themed exhibitions and presentations available to residents and visitors.
