Murgon’s Fossil Museum & Fine Art Gallery
The recent completion of a state-of-the-art cultural centre - “55 Million Years Ago” the Murgon Country Creative Association initiative features a local art gallery and fossil museum, housing replicas of some of the incredibly significant archaeological finds from the region. Discovered in the 1930s, the Murgon Fossil Site is the only site in Australia that records a diverse vertebrate fauna dating from the early Tertiary Period, over 55 million years ago and approximately ten million years after the extinction of the dinosaurs.
Fossil Museum
In the late 1980’s, marsupials found near Boat Mountain just outside Murgon in southern Queensland rocked the palaeontology world. They were among 15 new fossil species discovered here that were found to be 55 million years old, predating any other marsupial fossils found in Australia by 30 million years.
Although tiny in comparison to the bones of dinosaurs and other megafaunal animals in Queensland, the Murgon marsupials were much older than any previously found in the Riversleigh World Heritage fossil deposits which were, prior to the Murgon discovery, among the oldest marsupials known from Australia
